George Lo is a pre-eminent Malaysian litigator, political strategist and is the founding partner and namesake of our originating firm, George Lo & Partners.
Prior to the commencement of his illustrious career, he read law at Monash University's Clayton campus in Victoria before returning to Sarawak in East Malaysia to practice exclusively in high stakes corporate litigation. In his earlier days, he practiced under the supervision of the legendary Malaysian Federal Court Judge, Gopal Sri Ram. Regularly briefed by other counsels to appear at last ditch appeals, his privately managed blue chip client list includes major conglomerates and state-affiliated entities across Malaysia and Southeast Asia, reflecting his firm's prominence in high-stakes legal disputes. His representation of state lawmakers, mega conglomerates and government servants in a landmark cases exemplifies his capacity to handle the most high end and complex briefs. The most notable wins came through our firm's representation of former Sarawak Second Finance Minister, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, in a landmark case that redefined the legal landscape concerning the eligibility of elected officials. In 2017, the State Legislative Assembly passed a ministerial motion to disqualify Dr. Ting Tiong Choon from his position as state assembly member. On 11 February 2020, the Federal Court, in a 7-2 majority decision, upheld the disqualification, affirming that the Sarawak State Assembly acted within its constitutional rights. The Malaysian apex court's ruling clarified the interpretation of Article 17(1)(g) of the Sarawak Constitution, setting a precedent for how voluntary acquisition of foreign citizenship affects eligibility for public office. In 2021 following a full and drawn out trial, he successfully defended the Opposition Leader in a defamation suit brought by the Government (represented by a former State Attorney General) concerning statements made about the management and negotiation of the state's oil revenue, rights and resources. These published cases are now cornerstones in Malaysian legal studies, often cited in discussions about the balance between individual rights and constitutional mandates.
